Mini Meta Fest: Links round-up #3 (yeah, just a bit late)

[personal profile] anotherslashfan: 1. What makes THE movie fandom (big, e.g. XMFC, Inception, Avengers) 2. Drama fandom vs. other fan culture (e.g. media fandom) Fandom: Currently (January 2012-ish) a safespace to speak openly?
A charismatic villain will help. Usually, the movie fandoms that get BIG also have a mostly male, young (at least under forty-seeming) and white cast, with women and poc confined to stereotypes. Sadly enough. Just look at the examples in the prompt.

[personal profile] kabal42: Journals, archives or personal websites?
I'll go right ahead and admit I've never read anything on someone's personal website. I've looked on art hosted there, after finding links (mostly in journals), but not actually read fic. I very much enjoy being able to comment to the author (or at least let them know I liked their work somehow) and so far I haven't come across a personal site that had that option.

[personal profile] wishfulclicking: Underprivileged category/-ies of people in pop culture/fandom
Just possessing an underpriviledged member still gets noticed because it is so rare; majority of casts on major networks are overwhelmingly white; it's rare to see queer characters as the main character still, and to see a queer nonwhite character is even more of a rarity; women are getting more central roles in some shows and female centric films have done well in the box office but people still like to call it a trend and not good business to promote films to a sizeable chunk of the population, especially one so underserved.

15K race this weekend

Short-short version: 15K in sub-01:40:00 - I'm pretty happy with that, but also beginning to realize just how long a ½-marathon is, thinking of tacking an extra 6K on the end of that O_O

In which everything went better than expected

Pre-race post - after posting, I realized my running shoes were still out on the balcony, where I put them out to air the last time I went running. That is, Tuesday before last. *Headdesk*. So I quick brought them in and put them on the heater while I finished getting ready.

Short-short version: 10K in the vicinity of 01:05:00 - I'm shocked and thrilled!

I need a D: icon

I'm supposed to participate in a 10K race at 9 am (it's just past 7 now), which I kinda didn't train for and, right, I woke up to heavy snowfall and a couple of inches of snow on the ground already, and about -6° C D:

I haven't even figured out how to get there - my bike gears are frozen, and I'd get too sweaty and cold trying to bike the 5.5K there in the one gear that works, and I used up the rest of my bus pass and forgot to buy a new one. And the buses will no doubt be running irregularly due to all the snow, anyways. I can't decide if I should just take a taxi there to minimize pre-race stress and chill (there is no direct bus - waiting around for a late bus, it doesn't sound all that awesome), and then figure out bus pass and buses for the way home.

Still snowing heavily.

Gah, and the only people showing up for a race in these conditions (we've had an unusually warm winter, so we're not seasoned for this winter!winter weather!) will be the good runners, so I'm going to be Dead Fuck Last, and probably get lost on the route all alone.

Uhm, shit. But I guess unless I plan to wimp out, I need to get my things together asap and call for that taxi.

Mini Meta Fest: Links round-up #2

[personal profile] wishfulclicking: Aliens in fanfic
This is a scenario I have not come across often, but usually when I do find a fic that has a canon character be revealed as an alien, the character's alien nature is used to partially explain the character's canon odd ways.

[personal profile] wishfulclicking: What are the limits to characterise a character with a "foreign" background. esp. interested in how to use different languages (e.g. Erik in XMFC fic talking German)
Foreign is a matter of perspective.

[personal profile] kabal42: Serial monofandomous or multifandomous?
When I first entered fandom, I did not get the fandom slides. As in, the serial monofandomous people. They baffled me.

[personal profile] rodo:
Usage of other languages in your English fic (foreign characters, emphasis) - getting it wrong/right
My opinions on the whole thing are very complicated and different on a case to case basis, so I’m trying to boil them down to a few (seven) general rules regarding what I like when it comes to it

What makes THE movie fandom (big, e.g. XMFC, Inception, Avengers)
So, what do the above mentioned have that makes them more fandomy than others?

Do you ever come across statements in fic that seem wrong to you, but aren't easily verifiable? E.g. "it took them x hours to walk the y miles" (what? I know they're in good shape, but surely...). If yes, have you ever addressed the author on it?
I come across something like this every now and again, I suppose everyone does.

Mini Meta Fest Prompt #2 (227 words)

Character bashing - annoyance vs. appeal

I understand the temptation to engage in character bashing - if it's a character I dislike, it can be fun. There was that SV fic where a kid character remarks on Lana creeping him out with all her talk about her dead parents.

Of course if it's a character I like, then the author is totally petty, and not a very good writer, akshully, if she can't even write a fic without resorting to character bashing.

And then there's the time, where even if I'm not a fan of the character, either, the author is taking it too far, and should have written a rant on the character instead of a fic, which is ruined by the character bashing.

I'm in a ficcish mood these days (despite not reading fic/having any fics to read), so I'm trying to think of examples in fic for the last two, but those fics I probably wouldn't have in my recs lists, and I can't think of any.

I don't really have deep thoughts on this subject, but a superficial conclusion would be keep the character-bashing to rants, anywhere else, and you easily end up sounding petty.

Related, because I don't know if I'll ever get around to putting up that filtered discussion post, I came across this awesome DW interest the other week:

all the fictional women you hate

Fuck yeah.

Mini Meta Fest: Links round-up #1

[personal profile] kabal42: Which is your bigger (secret?) fic!kink: super-kompetent or woobie? Examples of fics that worked particularly well for you?
Initially this question puzzled me a bit for two reasons:
1) I wasn't certain of how to define woobie
2) I had never thought of that *G*

[personal profile] dancing_serpent: Fandom: Currently (January 2012-ish) a safespace to speak openly?
Fandom hasn't been a safe space for me for almost three years now. More and more I feel pressured. People seem to expect me to (dis)like certain things, and make me feel as if I fail - at being a fan/woman/human - when I don't meet those expectations.

[personal profile] dancing_serpent: (Sherlock BBC) Meshing ACD canon into Sherlock fanworks
I've never read Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. What little I know of ACD canon - and it is very little - was provided by [personal profile] thistlechild, when we were chatting about the various Holmes adaptations we have watched. Not many, in my case.

Getting Things Done chat?

I'm going to hate myself tomorrow if I'm both bored with doing nothing and have ALL the cleaning left to day.

Anyone up for a bit of Getting Things Done chatting, where I at least must needs leave and get 1 thing done every 10 mins?

Mini Meta Fest Prompt #1 (244 words)

Usage of other languages in your English fic (foreign characters, emphasis) - getting it wrong/right

I don't write fic, but Imma use this prompt to ease myself into meta by posting more or less stream of consciousness thoughts.

When I think about use of foreign languages in fic, a couple of examples spring to mind:

Old Country by [personal profile] astolat (SPN/HP crossover, Sam/Dean, [R], 40,647 words). There is a part of the fic that's in Latin, which I don't read, except for being able to guess at cognates. It (some of us readers not reading Latin) is resolved in a really clever way by the author.

What that reminds me of is when I first found Fandom, which was Harry Potter fandom, how impressed I was with authors making up Latin spells that sounded pretty darn convincing. Not necessarily as correct Latin, but as spells you could have found in canon.

Written By The Victors by [personal profile] cesperanza (SGA, John/Rodney, [NC-17], 52,719 words) also does some really interesting things with foreign language towards the end! I'm loath to give it away by actually talking about it (same with Astolat's fic).

I know there are fics that I've stopped reading, because they got the use of foreign language wrong, but I can't think of a specific example right now.

Last example and probably closest to (if still not exactly) what the prompter meant, is [personal profile] noracharles's Nye and old friends (TS/Bamses Billedbog crossover, gen, [G], 1,125 words). The blend of English and Danish works perfectly for me - it really flows surprisingly well.

Recs!?!

Y'all are not posting enough, so Imma post some recs (#2 is Yuletide, the rest are old fics, so maybe you know them):

The Art of the Deal by Littera Abactor (thefourthvine) (SG-1, gen, PG-13. Ish, 1301 words)
Summary: [None - I'm tempted to quote lines, but I won't.]
Review: This is. Hilarious. I laughed so hard. Oh, Daniel.

My Rascal Davies by Blue (abluestocking) (QI RPF, Alan Davies/Stephen Fry, [PG-13], 1158 words)
Summary: It's Christmas, and Stephen is faced with an epiphany.
Review: Every time I watch QI, I am giddy with love for Stephen Fry and Alan Davies, and want to smush them together. I wasn't sure if I could actually stomach fic (I often think I want to read pairings that it turns out I really, really don't), but this was lovely, and does so well with tone!

Take Atlantis by siegeofangels (SGA/crossover, gen, G, 750 words)
Summary: Atlantis is stuck with some guests for a week.
Review: The line "They are a good people, Teyla thinks." just gives me soft, fuzzy feelings <3
